In the sequel, Atlas is visited by his estranged mother, Sutton. Though he first thinks she's sought him out for money after finding out about his successful restaurant business, he realizes she's looking for help in finding his much younger brother Josh — a brother he never knew he had.

It is the sequel to her 2016 best-selling novel It Ends with Us. The novel continues from where It Ends with Us ended and centers on the relationship between Lily and Atlas. It alternates chapters between the first-person narration of Lily and Atlas.

Both still end with Lily and Atlas finding one another again and rekindling their romance, but unlike the movie where it is only heavily implied, the book makes it known that they are getting back together. In the book, she bumps into Atlas and tells him that she is ready to be loved by him again.

Ryle is upset but agrees to get help. Meanwhile, Atlas tells Sutton that he wants custody of Josh but encourages her to meet them once a week for dinner, so she can still have a relationship with both her sons. Six months after they began dating, Atlas and Lily move in together. A few years later, they get married.

Lily hopes she has finally ended the cycle of abuse in her family, telling her daughter, "It ends with us." In the epilogue, Lily, who is co-parenting with Ryle, finds Atlas and tells him that she is ready to restart her relationship with him.

He tries to rape Lily and when she bites his tongue, he headbutts her. She loses consciousness. She falls in and out of consciousness while Ryle apologizes, and then falls asleep. She's bleeding from her forehead, and it's difficult for her to see.

Chapter Twenty-Three: Atlas

After they have sex, Lily and Atlas talk about the legal situation with Josh.

Ryle comes back and asks Lily to tell him the truth. She does, telling Ryle that there's nothing going on between her and Atlas.

Emmy Kincaid is the daughter of Ryle and Lily. Lily finds out she is pregnant with Emmy when she is in ER being treated for injuries Ryle inflicted on her.

In his film adaptation, the ending depicts Lively's Lily meeting her former love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), after divorcing Ryle. She reveals to Atlas, “It's just the two of us,” meaning her and Emerson: Ryle is no longer in the picture.

Lily compares Atlas to the ocean. They have sex for the first time and say that they love each other. Up until that moment, Lily says that that was the best day of her life. Then her father, overhearing, bursts into Lily's bedroom and badly beats Atlas with a baseball bat.

The climax of the novel occurs when Ryle tries to rape Lily after he reads her adolescent diaries. This is a moment when, in a sense, the past and present converge.

They decide to name their daughter Emerson, after Ryle's brother. As she's holding her daughter for the first time, Lily tells Ryle she wants a divorce. She asks him to imagine what he would say to their daughter if she grew up to be hit by the person she loved.

But at the end of the novel, which takes place a year later and which Hoover clearly intends to be a redemption scene, we see Lily and Ryle, amicably divorced and co-parenting their daughter. In that scene, Ryle, who is a violent sex offender, is picking up the baby for “his days with her.”

Ryle sees them together, and he learns that the chef is Atlas, the boy from Lily's past. It comes to blows and Atlas throws Ryle out of his restaurant. Lily assures Ryle that nothing is going on between her and Atlas. They enjoy a period of peace and decide to get married in Vegas.

'It Starts with Us' is the sequel to 'It Ends with Us,' so as a general rule, you should read 'It Ends with Us' first. 'It Ends with Us' is told from Lily's perspective, whereas the other one, 'It Starts with Us,' provides both Lily and Atlas's viewpoints.

Out of her 24 total novels, there are 11 stand-alone books and four series: the Slammed series, Hopeless series, Maybe Someday series and, of course, the It Ends With Us series, which includes It Ends With Us (2016) and It Starts With Us (2022).

Will there be a third book in the series? That remains to be seen. In a recent chat with PEOPLE, Hoover admitted that, "in the last maybe year and a half, closing in on two years, I haven't written at all and I feel a lot of guilt for that.
